"Urban Echoes will explore the capacity of music, storytelling and performance to deepen belonging in the resilient and diverse neighbourhoods of Baneswell (Newport) and Haslach (Freiburg). Das Clarks, Cargo Theater and participants will co-create songs and shared experiences drawn from the materials of everyday life: work, home life, caring, memories and neighbourhood soundscapes. We’re interested in what happens when people create and perform alongside artists and when communities are digitally linked across borders:  how this might amplify local voices, strength

About the partners

Cargo-Theater was established in Freiburg in 1992. We have extensive experience in socio-cultural practice and participatory work with a wide range of communities and associations from civil society.

We are rooted in the district of Haslach, a socially diverse neighbourhood shaped by a multiplicity of lived realities and cultural perspectives. From this context, we understand theatre as an art form that creates spaces for encounter, dialogue, and collective reflection — a forum in which people come together to exchange experiences, question social conditions, and imagine alternatives.

We seek to support local, national and international collaboration and to remain dynamic and adaptable in response to a continually changing society. We use both established and innovative methods to support participation, including digital storytelling, workshops, and the integration of discussion into performance.

The starting point of our productions are not ready-made drama texts, but rather topics that are close to our hearts as theatre makers and ‘burn under the nails’.

Das Clarks is a Wales-based performance collective creating theatre, art and participatory experiences that challenge perceptions and inspire change. For over 20 years, we’ve been making playful, political and inclusive work rooted in the communities around us and always with a DIY spirit.

Born in Newport and shaped by its post-industrial landscape, our work lives in streets, prisons, festivals, living rooms, and theatres. We believe in using what’s available — space, materials, stories — to make something honest, interactive, and human.”
